Often forgotten costs
Water and electricity accounts
You will need to submit an application to the council to open these accounts.
You will need to provide supporting documents. These include a copy of your identity document and proof of address.
Initial connection costs
There are different levels of deposits that apply depending on the type of property. It also depends whether you are connecting water only, electricity only or both. As a general rule, you should budget between R5,000 and R9,000 for municipal connection deposit.
Moving costs
You may need to contact a moving company to give you a quote. This is, of course, if you don’t have an uncle in the cartage business!
Create a moving checklist – start a file of “moving papers”.
Let people know about your change of address.
Plan in advance. It’s generally cheaper to move in the middle of the month, as rates are far more competitive than month-end.
Confirm the price, date and time of moving.
Arrange for hand-over of keys. You can get your property professional involved in this process.
Security costs
If required, join the local security response company.
Remember to change the locks and the code for gate remotes.
